Posture

"Every deviation from normal (posture), however slight, should be taken care of as soon as it is detected."
-Josephine Rathbone. Ph.D. “Corrective Physical Education P.2”

The body was not designed to sit for long periods of time. If you find yourself in an occupation requiring a lot of sitting it is essential you regularily change your sitting position during the day. An option that I have been using in my classroom is a Japanese kneeling (seiza) bench and desk. Students can cycle between using the kneeling bech as well as traditional western chairs and desks. My experience has led me to the conclusion that changing position is the key to protecting the sitting body. I have had a very postive student response to this new option and have expanded the number of benches in my classroom.

The last photo of Dr. Ed Thomas shows the prototype that the benches were made from. If you would like to make your seiza bench we have Dr. Ed Thomas' plans.
